This year's regatta featured two main events — the 500-meter sprint and the 1,500-meter pursuit — with categories for elite athletes, masters, university competitors, and youth rowers.

"It's a really nice stretch of water to row on. It is sheltered from the wind. It's nice to be in the middle of the city with all the houses around you," said German rower Nikita Mohr, who won gold in the lightweight men's double sculls at the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Mohr, a student from the University of Cambridge, is visiting Shanghai for the second time.

"Overall, especially rowing-wise, I think the city is really like a leader," he added.

The Bund left a deep impression on Mohr during his first visit 12 years ago, and this visit has reinforced that memory.

"The city has become much greener. It's impressive how many electric cars there are everywhere," he said.

For Julia Wesseling from the Netherlands, who is visiting China for the first time, Shanghai is both modern and welcoming. "It's a really nice blend of contemporary architectural elements that work together harmoniously, without feeling overstimulating," she said.

She was also impressed by the regatta itself. "This event is very professional, and you really notice that in everything, like the opening ceremony and how everything is organized. It's a very stimulating environment for athletes," she added.

Barbara Krause from Poland, who is participating for the second year and works in Shanghai's artificial intelligence industry, has seen the event grow.

"There is a strong push to develop rowing in Shanghai, with many new clubs opening and existing ones expanding. Many young people are getting involved in the sport," she said.

Krause believes that rowing can help people gain a deeper understanding of China's culture and history while also building a healthy and resilient mindset.

Located adjacent to Suzhou Creek and rooted in the core area of Changfeng Ecological Business District, Jia Art forms a new urban cultural tourism route together with Changfeng Park and the Half Marathon Suzhou Creek Park, offering a combined experience of "exhibition, park stroll, and riverside leisure." 

The venue was designed by a team led by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Norman Foster. The architecture mimics the growth of flowers and leaf veins extending from the ground to the sky, blossoming into petal-like facades that embody an "inside-out" structural aesthetic.

Covering a total floor area of approximately 5,000 square meters, the museum features a north-south dual-core layout and houses professional-grade art galleries, a digital exhibition hall, a cultural and creative store, and an art salon.

As Putuo District’s first comprehensive high-end art exhibition covering an entire historical period, "Culture in Focus" traces the trajectory of Chinese art over three millennia, from the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC-771 BC) to the present day. The exhibition is organized into three parallel sections: "The Huaxia Legacy," "Bridge East and West," and "Faces of the Times."

The exhibition brings together numerous national treasures and masterpieces. In "The Huaxia Legacy," visitors can marvel at oracle bone inscriptions from the Shang Dynasty (around 1600 BC-1046 BC) and the bronze Xi Jia plate from the fifth year of King Xuan's reign during the Western Zhou Dynasty.

"Bridge East and West" focuses on the introduction of Western painting to China since the Republican era, vividly capturing the fusion of Western media and Eastern poetics. A highlight is Liu Haisu’s “Suzhou Creek,” a seminal work depicting Shanghai by the founder of modern Chinese art education.

"Faces of the Times" features dozens of contemporary portrait oil paintings from both Chinese and international artists, including Chen Yifei's “Flutist,” Zeng Fanzhi's “Doctor,” and Yayoi Kusama's “Girl,” showcasing the diverse landscape of contemporary art.

From May 1 to May 24, the Coffee Culture Themed Art Exhibition will kick off at the Liu Haisu Art Museum (Branch). Artists will use coffee as a medium, employing oil painting, watercolor, printmaking, and other techniques to depict delicate stories of coffee time, interpreting Shanghai’s unique charm and cultural heritage as the “city of coffee” through visual language.

From May 14 to May 24, the Coffee Culture Carnival will take over Global Harbor. The mall’s south square will gather dozens of premium coffee brands from the Yangtze River Delta region, independent roasters, and food & cultural creative stalls, creating an urban “coffee by day, wine by night” atmosphere. A coffee robot will serve latte art coffee on site, while giant coffee cup inflatables and creative art installations will also debut.

On the fourth floor’s Global Hall, a “Coffee+” themed forum and a coffee-themed exhibition will be held simultaneously. The Coffee Grounds Recycling Initiative will also be launched, with self-service collection points set up at the market and coffee shops inside the mall. Member handcraft salons, including coffee ground succulent DIY, handmade paintings, and incense tablets, will give coffee grounds a new lease on life.

In recent years, Putuo has continuously improved its service mechanisms, conducted comprehensive corporate surveys, and increased the precision of policy support. 

Shanghai Yuanyi Food Technology Co Ltd, located in Taopu Town, is a national benchmark in the HHP ultra-high pressure sterilization fresh juice industry. The company is now accelerating efforts to establish a new factory. Upon learning of the expansion plan, the district commerce commission promptly visited the company to explain the consignment processing model.

Once completed, the new factory is expected to cover major regional markets across East China, North China, South China, Central China, and Southwest China. Thanks to Putuo’s targeted services, the company’s orders have steadily increased, with total industrial output value rising 58.71 percent year-on-year in 2025 and surging 72.52 percent in the first three months of 2026, becoming a new growth driver for Taopu’s industrial economy.

Meanwhile, Broetje Automation Equipment (Shanghai) Co Ltd has independently developed high-end equipment including an intelligent assembly line for aero engines and an automatic drilling and riveting line for fuselage panels. These are mainly used in aero engine manufacturing and structural assembly for domestic large aircraft.

Guided by the commission, the equipment received the “First Set Breakthrough” certification for high-end intelligent equipment from the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology. The company soon secured multiple related product orders, helping its industrial output value in the first quarter of this year grow by more than 40 percent year-on-year.

Behind these impressive results lies Putuo District’s sustained efforts to pursue a new path of industrialized development, coordinating industrial economic performance, fostering a tiered growth system for enterprises, and ensuring precise policy implementation.

The competition is closely aligned with Shanghai’s modern industrial system and features six dedicated tracks:

Integrated Circuits – covering the entire semiconductor industry chain, chip design, manufacturing and packaging/testing, equipment and materials, and future computing technologies.

Biomedicine – covering modern pharmaceuticals, high-end medical devices, digital health, food technology, and future biotechnology.

Artificial Intelligence – covering next-generation information technologies, future intelligence, and cross-disciplinary innovation.

Green & Low-Carbon – covering advanced materials, new energy, and future energy technologies.

High-End Equipment – covering intelligent manufacturing equipment, major technical equipment, and future exploration tools.

Fashion & Consumer – covering technology-empowered and experience-driven consumer innovations, cultural and creative tech, and new retail and supply chains.

Based on the project’s development stage, applicants may select from three categories:

Seed Stage: for projects that have not yet registered a business entity in China.

Startup Stage: for businesses registered between January 1, 2021 and the competition registration deadline (May 31, 2026).

Growth Stage: for businesses registered between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2020.

Project submissions are open from now through May 31, 2026. In June, a preliminary document review will be followed by pitch-based evaluations. Each sub-competition will select 15 outstanding talent projects to advance to the city-level semifinals in August and the grand finals in October.

Winning projects will receive cash prizes as well as a range of support policies, including talent settlement, talent housing, investment and financing assistance, and office space support.

Catering to about 1,000 foreign residents from more than 30 countries in Yichuan subdistrict, the column is supported by a trinity service system comprising bilingual online posts, an offline service station, and a volunteer team speaking 11 languages. It offers community news, activity alerts, policy guides and cultural information.

Expats have participated in a series of offline events, including Spring Festival dumpling-making sessions, Mid-Autumn Festival gatherings, chrysanthemum exhibitions and Chinese opera dress-up performances. Many foreigners have transitioned from being participants to volunteers and content contributors, sharing their stories via the column.

Foreign residents have praised the initiative for fostering a deeper understanding of local culture and creating a sense of belonging. The subdistrict will launch a "foreigner spokesperson" program to encourage expatriates to participate in community governance and engage in cross-cultural communication.

In addition to activities for foreign residents, Yichuan subdistrict has also hosted international delegations such as a Brazilian youth elite study tour and a Saudi governance capacity-building seminar, spreading the story of China’s grassroots governance to a wider audience. Foreign visitors have spontaneously shared their experiences by taking photos and making vlogs, while foreign bloggers have posted on platforms such as Instagram and Xiaohongshu.

Northeast and northwest corners of Daduhe Road and Wuning Road

Two flower beds here face the Beijing-Shanghai and Shanghai-Nanjing expressway entry points, serving as the "first view" for many vehicles entering the city. The festival design uses framed floral art as a theme, featuring dry creek beds, flower belts and vine-woven ribbon landscapes on the two corners.

TOP Central Park

On the expansive lawn, patterned flower ribbons outline the image of the flower festival's mascot, "Flower Baby," creating a natural painting spread across the green space. In early May, the park's newly built water curtain fountain will be activated, with flower seas and the fountain complementing each other to add a new highlight.

Half-Marathon Suzhou Creek No. 2 Park 

The flower display here draws inspiration from classic Chinese porcelain patterns depicting koi fish swimming among lotus flowers. Strolling along the riverbank, visitors feel as if they have stepped into a blue-and-white porcelain painting, with the poetic scene of "fish playing among lotus leaves" unfolding before their eyes.

Changfeng Park

The star of Changfeng Park is the rose. In the park's rose garden, ground-planted roses will reach peak bloom during the flower festival. The main exhibition area at the Grand Stage Plaza will be transformed into a dreamy rose garden.

Hong Shou Fang

At Hong Shou Fang, natural beauty and the vibrant energy of daily life coexist harmoniously. Themed floral installations stand quietly in plazas and street corners, while a specialty flower market will open simultaneously. Several co-created floral arrangement workshops will also be held during the event.

Wang Yifan, a senior student at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, is one of the beneficiaries of this policy. Late last year, she received an internship opportunity in a company in Putuo, but was concerned about accommodation. She was relieved to find that Putuo offers up to three months of free accommodation in talent apartments to interns from top global universities.

Wang was housed in a talent apartment hotel in Putuo, sharing a room with another intern, with amenities including separate wet and dry areas, daily cleaning and breakfast provided free of charge.

"This internship has made me love Shanghai," she said with a smile. "I've already recommended it to many juniors to encourage them to come to Shanghai."

The new policy targets four main groups: global top-tier and national high-level innovation and entrepreneurship talent; graduates with master's degrees or higher from the world's top 100 universities and China's "double first-class" universities; interns from globally recognized universities; and talent from cities along the Shanghai-Nanjing Industrial Innovation Belt needing short-term accommodation. Putuo has initially allocated 500 housing units with tiered rent reductions or exemptions for these groups.

For top global and national talent, Putuo offers up to six months of full rental subsidies. Since the policy's implementation, nearly 300 individuals have applied for the outstanding graduates’ accommodation policy, with over 60 percent of them meeting the criteria. Many beneficiaries have chosen to pursue careers in Shanghai, particularly in Putuo.

The highlight of the fair is a stunning "botanical garden" installed right in the mall's atrium. Visitors are greeted by a panoramic sea of blooming flowers, featuring over 30 varieties of hydrangeas, more than 300 plant species, and over 3,000 trees and flowers, creating a richly layered spring landscape.

But the fair is more than just static floral displays. As a renewed edition of the "Breeze Life Festival" IP, this year's event focuses on lifestyle integration and social experiences.

Beyond the flower-filled walkways, over 60 lifestyle brands and more than 40 independent curators have gathered to offer visitors abundant spring living inspiration. More than ten global brands are taking part in a joint exhibition, showcasing new possibilities for diverse lifestyles. For those in need of a rest, a wine-tasting area featuring over 70 selected wines offers a relaxing, tipsy escape.

On weekends, the venue transforms into a healing space for sight and sound. Sunset concerts fill the spring breeze with romantic melodies, while craft enthusiasts lead floral workshops and creative DIY activities. Other attractions include flower deity parades and fortune-telling sessions.

Through life-sized installations and immersive interactive experiences, the classic IP, cherished for 15 years, brings its magical creatures into the real world, allowing players to reunite with iconic characters from their childhood.  

Since its launch in 2010, “Roco Kingdom” has won the hearts of countless players. On March 26 this year, the new title “Roco Kingdom: World” was released and quickly topped trending lists across multiple platforms.  

The free event features giant inflatable installations of classic characters including the "Starter Trio", Dream, and Duck, drawing both new and veteran "Little Rocos" to pose for photos. The venue also offers several hidden photo spots and themed frames, inviting visitors to explore and discover.  

By adopting an innovative "gaming + public space" model, the event breathes new life into Taopu’s public spaces. Future pop-up exhibitions will continue to inject a youthful, international vibe into the area through even more interactive and distinctive formats.

A number of classic Nantong Banyao kites, a traditional whistling kite, are on show, each a masterpiece. Some kites use carbon-fiber frames that fold, with whistles made from naturally carved gourds and blue-and-white porcelain-style dragon patterns. Others feature auspicious figures such as Fu, Lu, Shou (fortune, prosperity, longevity) and delicate Peking opera mask motifs, blending traditional culture into kite artistry.

Visitors can also admire a large phoenix kite with a wingspan of 5.8 meters, as well as miniature kites.

Wang Zhiqing, a provincial-level inheritor of Nantong Banyao kite craftsmanship, was on site to explain the techniques and cultural meaning behind the kites. He noted that the making of the kites integrates multiple skills — even the whistles alone require natural materials such as gourds, nutshells, and silkworm cocoons. The bamboo frames undergo multiple treatments to withstand strong winds. 

“The kite can fly at 200 meters at minimum and reach up to 500 meters in open areas,” Wang said. “The whistles produce harmonious sounds, earning the kite the title of ‘symphony in the air.’”

Starting in April, Global Harbor has also launched a nighttime consumption season, with dozens of merchants extending opening hours and offering group-buying promotions. The mall is offering free parking from 10pm to 2am the next day.

The two sides will deepen cooperation in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, big data and other fields, aiming to accelerate the construction of Putuo’s modern industrial system and digital transformation, while promoting regional industrial cluster development and high-quality growth of the digital economy.

At the summit, Tencent Cloud unveiled its upgraded products and solutions designed for the era of Agent.

A dedicated sub-forum titled “Putuo Digital Economy Ecosystem Co-creation” was held during the event. Representatives from Putuo enterprises shared insights, including Shanghai World Expo Information Network Co Ltd, which presented a case study on digital advertising driven by AI and big data. Executives from Leo Digital and Vision Star also participated in a roundtable discussion on opportunities and challenges for the digital advertising industry in the AI era.

In 2025, Putuo District’s digital advertising enterprises above designated size achieved revenue exceeding 40 billion yuan (US$5.81 billion), a year-on-year increase of 17.6 percent, contributing 1.8 percentage points to the industry’s growth across the city.

Tencent Cloud will leverage its full-stack AI service capabilities to help Putuo build a regional digital transformation platform centered on the Shanghai International Digital Advertising Park, accelerating enterprise cloud adoption and industrial agglomeration. 

The two parties will also collaborate in areas such as government services, cultural tourism, healthcare, education, finance and digital advertising, jointly exploring innovative AI applications and establishing a collaborative platform for government, enterprises and industrial ecosystems. 

These efforts aim to enhance digital connectivity across the industrial chain and provide strong support for the construction of “Digital Putuo.”

Suzhou Creek Half Marathon Park

The Suzhou Creek Half Marathon Park blends natural landscapes with interactive play to create a vibrant outdoor haven for families. Home to the largest sandpit along Putuo's Suzhou Creek, the park features boat installations and lookout platforms where children can explore freely.

TOP Central Park

TOP Central Park is an open green space that blends natural ecology with modern design. The park features a non-motorized playground with brightly colored slides, climbing nets and sandpits. Children can run freely across the lawns and explore every corner, turning a simple visit into a full outdoor adventure.

Step into the pinecone-themed playground at Qidonglin Park and it feels like entering a fairytale world inspired by nature. Pinecone-shaped slides, climbing nets and charming stools bring a playful, nature-based design to life.

Jamieson, a Canadian company with a long history, is a manufacturer of dietary supplements and nutritional foods including vitamins, minerals, and herbal nutrients. Listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, Jamieson operates in more than 50 countries worldwide and ranks among the top three global players in the health supplement industry.

Roquette, a French family-owned group, is a global leader in plant-based ingredients. The company now operates in over 100 countries, with more than 30 production sites and over 8,000 employees worldwide.

The certificates were presented at the 42nd ceremony conferring regional headquarters and R&D center status to multinational companies. Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng issued certificates to 30 regional headquarters and 15 foreign-funded R&D centers.

In 2025, four foreign enterprises in Putuo District were recognized by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce as regional headquarters or foreign-funded R&D centers. Apart from the two companies at the latest ceremony, the other two are Deutz (Shanghai) International Trade Co Ltd and Evatec (Shanghai) Co Ltd.

In 2026, Konecranes and Rituals were certified as regional headquarters of multinational companies. To date, Putuo District is home to 45 foreign-funded headquarters enterprises.

Runner Gao Chengliang was the first to cross the finish line at Suzhou Creek Half Marathon Park, clocking 1:04:54. He was followed by Sheng Wang (1:06:15), and Wang Tao (1:07:12).

The women's crown went to Zhao Na, who completed the race in 1:13:39. She was followed by Chang Miaomiao (1:15:22) and Zhang Cao (1:17:39).

The 21-kilometer race route is flat and open, winding its way along Suzhou Creek, connecting industrial heritage sites, ecological green spaces, traditional lane neighborhoods, and creative parks. As runners make their way along the course, they can experience the natural beauty of riverside breezes, bridges, tree-lined paths, and blooming flowers, while also soaking in the lived-in warmth of local shops and community streets.

According to the organizers, 98.84 percent of the runners managed to complete the race. The top 150 male and top 100 female runners won themselves a place in the 2026 Shanghai Marathon which will be held in December.

Some 882 volunteers from four universities and colleges provided services for the event. A total of 22 medical spots and 15 ambulances were arranged along the route to ensure runners' safety.

The 21-kilometer journey will start from Changshou Road, and the finish line is set at Suzhou Creek Half Marathon Park.

The top 150 male and 100 female finishers will win themselves entries into the 2026 Shanghai Marathon which will be held in December.

Moreover, the top three male and female runners will receive 7,500 yuan (US$1,087), 5,000 yuan and 2,500 yuan, respectively, in prize money.

Water stations will be arranged every five kilometers along the route. There will also be fruit and energy bar supplies.

According to the organizers, this year's event has attracted overseas runners from 13 countries and regions.

The event, which adopted an innovative "conference + event month" format for the first time, showcased Putuo's top-tier investment and business environment.

To elevate the development of building economy, Putuo District released the action plan to promote high-quality development of building economy for the next three years, aiming to transform office buildings into "vertical industrial parks and three-dimensional economic hubs." Meanwhile, key areas such as Taopu Smart City have rolled out high-quality industrial land, providing ample space for quality projects and corporate growth.

In the digital advertising sector, Putuo District has gathered over 1,000 related enterprises. In 2025, revenue from digital advertising enterprises above designated size exceeded 40 billion yuan (US$5.80 billion), a year-on-year increase of 17.6 percent, contributing 1.8 percentage points to the city's industry growth. 

In the future, Putuo will focus on building the Shanghai International Digital Advertising Park to high standards, innovating service systems, optimizing the industrial ecosystem, and vigorously promoting the development of the digital advertising industry.

The conference also highlighted the latest policies in technology finance aimed at improving service systems, and outlined forward-looking plans for the silver economy, a future industry with significant potential, as part of efforts to cultivate new growth drivers.

In 2025, Putuo attracted 15 new enterprises with tax revenues exceeding 100 million yuan and 150 enterprises with tax revenues exceeding 10 million yuan. The total investment from projects above designated scale reached 64 billion yuan. In January 2026 alone, investment amounted to 14.418 billion yuan, achieving 21.5 percent of the annual target and ranking second in the city. A total of 56 key projects were attracted, a year-on-year increase of 108 percent.

The district has developed 59 such platforms, including 10 national-level, 32 municipal-level, 15 district-level research platforms, and two functional platforms focused on robotics and industrial control safety.

By 2025, these platforms had served more than 18,000 enterprises, providing technical services for nearly 110,000 times and generating 151 new authorized patents.

The Shanghai Technical Service Platform for Polyolefin Synthetic Technology and Process Control not only successfully commissioned high-end polyolefin production using fully proprietary metallocene catalysts and the hopene solution process, but also achieved a world first with its slurry loop process for its ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene unit, pioneering the industrial-scale production of sub-5-micron next-generation lithium battery separators.

Science and technology platforms in Putuo not only focus on research but also actively promote the translation of laboratory results into industrial production. The Shanghai Research Institute of Chemical Industry's stable isotope engineering technology research center advanced the commercialization of carbon-13, oxygen-18, and heavy water products in 2025, achieving full-capacity production of carbon-13 at a low-temperature distillation base in Anhui province.

Putuo's such platforms are also looking beyond the district by strengthening collaborative innovation with cities along the Shanghai-Nanjing Industrial Innovation Belt.

The Shanghai Electrical Apparatus Research Institute's technical innovation service platform for small and medium-sized motors and systems has partnered closely with Nanjing CIGU Technology Corporation and other key enterprises along the Shanghai-Nanjing industrial chain to conduct joint R&D and co-develop talent.

Peach Blossom Festival blooms in Taopu 

The 2026 Shanghai Peach Blossom Festival's Taopu events will take place at the UBOX Creative Art Community and Taopu Park from March 21 to 22. 

The celebration features three main sections: 

A 3.5-kilometer "City Rambling by Bike" route connects Liziyuan Park, TOP Central Park, and Taopu Park. 

The "Taopu Spring Market" offers hands-on experiences including Shanghai-style peach blossom paper-cutting, intangible cultural heritage peach blossom sachets, and pressed peach blossom bookmarks. 

Meanwhile, UBOX debuts two exhibitions: the "All Things Spiritual" ecological installation art show and a photography exhibition by French photographer Alain de Freese, seamlessly blending with the festival's spring theme.

Cherry blossom season returns to Suzhou Creek 

While Taopu's peach blossoms carry millennia-old cultural memories of the "Taoxi" (Peach Creek) heritage, the cherry trees blooming along Suzhou Creek waterfront tell a story of modern urban romance.

The 4th "1000 Trees Cherry Blossom Season," hosted by Tian An 1000 Trees, will unfold from March 27 to April 19 along the 900-meter riverside cherry blossom promenade. This year's event features cherry blossom-themed sightseeing boats, an immersive market, and diverse cultural activities.

The popular Suzhou Creek cherry blossom boat tour will return. Pink open-top boats will glide through the blossom-lined waterway, slowing near Changhua Road Bridge to offer visitors a romantic "riverside cherry blossom rain" perspective.

Weekend concerts staged at TOP Central Park

Meanwhile, the weekly performances series was launched on March 14 at TOP Central Park, with Saturday sessions continuing weekly. The "Spring Symphony" theme coincides with 14,000 square meters of tulips now in peak bloom, transforming this natural terraced theater into a spring-exclusive "open-air KTV."

To promote the sport, all matches will be open to the public free of charge. Spectators can scan a QR code to register for attendance.

This year's championship has set a record for participation, attracting over 250 athletes from 75 teams representing 21 organizations nationwide, a nearly 30 percent increase from the previous edition. The competition features men's, women's, and mixed doubles events, with more than 180 matches scheduled.

The tournament brings together many of China's top curlers. Jiang Jiayi and Han Yu, who recently competed in the Milan Winter Olympics, will represent Beijing. Yue Qingshuang, bronze medalist at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, will compete for Anhui. Ling Zhi and Fan Suyuan, both Beijing Winter Olympians, along with Wang Zhiyu, who participated in the 2025 Asian Winter Games, will also showcase their skills.

For the venue, the biggest challenge was transforming the ice surface, according to Ren Chao, deputy general manager of Shanghai Guojin Sports Management Center. The conversion from a training rink for ice hockey and figure skating to a professional curling venue meeting international standards took just 15 days.
