As autumn breezes sweep across Shanghai, cycling enthusiasm surges along the Suzhou Creek waterfront. The month-long "Tongyili Cycling Season" kicked off on September 4 at West Lane Tongyili in Putuo District, transforming the riverside venue into a popular gathering spot for local cycling enthusiasts through October 4.
Open every Friday through Sunday from 4pm to 9pm, the outdoor carnival features brand markets, pet-friendly cycling sessions and retro music parties, bringing vibrant weekend leisure experiences to the Suzhou Creek waterfront.
The event covers four core sections to cater to cycling lovers. The mini oriental cycling market gathers more than 15 lifestyle brands, offering one-stop shopping experience for professional cycling gear and trendy merchandise. Organizers will also donate protective equipment and deliver cycling safety training programs for teenagers in Bachu, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, linking Shanghai's urban vitality with public welfare support.
Weekend influencer sessions invite national cycling champions to share climbing skills and senior bloggers to exchange long-distance cycling experience, enabling amateur riders to learn and improve. A creative travel zone integrates sedan trunk markets with cycling experiences. A millennial female vocal music party opened on September 4 at the central plaza of Tongyili.
A signature five-second cycling challenge invites visitors to balance upright on a bicycle for five seconds to win surprise gifts, organizers said.
The cycling season includes a rich lineup of themed activities. A health lecture for diabetes patients is scheduled for September 11. Pet-friendly cycling gatherings and dog obstacle competitions will take place on September 12 and 26. A dual contemporary ink art exhibition by artists Chen Jia and Qian Manli will launch at Paper Design Lab on September 19. A public cycling safety class is set for September 27, alongside a second-hand kids' bicycle renewal campaign.
Co-hosted by Tongyili and the newly opened cultural space Paper Design Lab, the event leverages the venue's growing reputation as a landmark for outdoor sports and lifestyle activities. Located on the third and fourth floors of Tongyili, Paper Design Lab serves as a shared platform for culture, art and creative industries, providing multi-functional office spaces for creative teams.
Tongyili has long been an active node on Putuo's cycling map. It has previously served as the finish line for district cycling events, supplied refreshments for Suzhou Creek night running groups and participated in outdoor route planning, building consistent connections with urban sports communities.
Benefiting from the longest continuous Suzhou Creek shoreline in downtown Shanghai, Putuo boasts a mature cycling ecosystem. It features two iconic routes: the 21-kilometer riverside scenery route and a tree-shaded leisure trail in Caoyang community.
Putuo has regularly hosted high-profile outdoor events, including New Year cycling runs, talent cycling challenges and the Suzhou Creek Fashion Cycling Festival. Last year's inaugural festival integrated sports participation, commercial scenarios and consumption vitality, forming a sustainable urban lifestyle economy loop.
