Seeds of science are taking root along the Suzhou Creek waterfront in Putuo District, as Changfeng Bay Community Academy delivers hands-on learning to all ages and builds a 15-minute science service network for local residents.
 
Nestled at 160 Daduhe Rd in the Half-Marathon Suzhou Creek Changfeng Bay area, the 10,000-square-meter community hub has run 30 offline events over the past year, drawing more than 2,500 participants and registering 200 science volunteers. The project is supported by Shanghai's grassroots science popularization initiative.
 
Science for All Ages
 
The academy's "Science Enlightenment" series starts with simple experiments like water quality testing. Children use pH paper and electrolysis to compare tap water, bottled water and soft drinks, turning abstract chemistry into visible results. Eight courses cover carbon dioxide, soil testing, electricity and coding, with hands-on projects such as sound-controlled lamps and rubber-band-powered cars.
 
Suzhou Creek Heritage
 
The "Suzhou Creek Exploration" series revives local culture and intangible heritage. Workshops include mother-of-pearl hairpin making, cloisonné art, mosaic lamps and Song-style brocade crafts. Spring calligraphy events let residents write couplets together, blending tradition with community warmth.
 
Senior-Friendly Programs
 
Ten "Community Friendly" events cater to senior residents. Activities include mug painting, health talks, handmade soap, cloisonné jewelry and gold leaf art. The academy frames seniors not as recipients of care but as active community contributors.
 
Waterfront Science Experiences
 
Four waterfront-themed events turn the Suzhou Creek into a living classroom. Children build mini-ecosystems in bottles; residents assemble and fly small drones; delivery riders use VR for immersive experiences; and a peace auction teaches youth about global issues.
