Putuo's innovative opera flash mob draws big holiday crowds

May 09, 2026 |

Putuo District wrapped up the five-day May Day holiday with robust tourism and commercial performance.

Key cultural and tourist venues across the district received 282,900 visitors, a year-on-year increase of 145 percent. Hotel occupancy reached 78 percent, while 14 major commercial districts monitored by the district government recorded over 2 million visits, up 8.3 percent from last year.

The integration of waterfront spaces and cultural activities became the highlight of Putuo’s holiday offerings.

On May 1, the first flash mob performance of the Excellence Program of the China Plum Performance Award took place along the Half Marathon Suzhou Creek. Using a Suzhou Creek cruise boat as a mobile stage and the Tian An 1000 Trees as the central stage, the event featured award-winning performers of the Plum Performance Award and the Shanghai Magnolia Performance Art Award. Traditional Chinese operas including Peking Opera, Kunqu, Yue Opera, Shanghai Opera, and Huai Opera were staged in succession.

The flash mob was presented in both Chinese and English, offering a shared experience for domestic and international audiences. It created an immersive "journey within a painting" atmosphere, bringing high art out of theaters and into daily life. This innovative model was also featured by China Central Television.

During the holiday, Suzhou Creek cruise services launched four themed trips -- tea culture, nostalgic golden oldies, spring dining, and pet-friendly cruises. More than 250 trips were operated, with average daily trips up 8.54 percent year on year. The average occupancy rate reached 92 percent, serving over 4,000 passengers.

Meanwhile, three major shopping centers -- Zhenru UniPark MAX, Changfeng Joy City, and Tian An 1000 Trees -- all recorded double-digit growth in both foot traffic and sales revenue during the holiday.
