The Putuo District Intangible Cultural Heritage Center, now the city's newest and largest theme museum dedicated to intangible cultural heritage, opened to the public today.
Within its 1,058-square-meter immersive space, various intangible heritage items from Putuo are presented through a multidimensional blend of physical objects, thematic settings, and digital projection. This innovative approach transforms intangible cultural heritage from something merely observed into an interactive experience.
Among the highlights are newly recognized district-level heritage skills from the seventh batch, making their public debut—including Jade Buddha Temple vegetarian cuisine, traditional rubbing techniques, and medicinal incense making.
The center integrates multiple functional areas: a thematic exhibition hall, a multifunctional interactive stage, heritage practice studios, a cultural and creative products zone, and a heritage-themed reading corner. Here, exhibition, hands-on experience, skill transmission, reading, and digital exploration come together organically, creating a tangible, perceptible, and participatory cultural environment.
Visitors can also strike their own commemorative coin on-site, feeling the warmth of heritage craftsmanship through hands-on forging while creating a unique cultural keepsake for the Chinese New Year.
In the Shanghai-style lacquer art section, a digital simulation system allows visitors to personally experience the complete process—from forming the base to polishing the finish—appreciating the profound beauty of lacquer art.
Moving along, an interactive installation offers a chance to engage with the national-level intangible heritage "Lu’s Xinyi Boxing," blending virtual and physical elements to convey the wellness wisdom of "form and intent moving as one."
During the Spring Festival, local heritage practices such as bamboo weaving and Changzheng paper art will join forces with premium intangible heritage items from cities along the Shanghai-Nanjing Industrial Innovation Belt, including Nanjing velvet flowers, Suzhou embroidery, and Zhenjiang aromatic vinegar. These will be showcased along the riverside walkway at Tian An 1000 Trees, blending into the commercial district through experiential workshops and themed markets.
