Ancient ginkgo adorns Shanghai mall, blending centuries of history with modern vibrancy

December 04, 2025 |

The centuries-old ginkgo tree, numbered 0057, at the UniPark MAX mall in Zhenru area has donned its golden autumn attire, entering the most visually striking viewing season of the year.

This over-500-year-old ginkgo, the earliest protected ancient tree in Putuo District, stands quietly amidst the modern commercial complex with a height of 18.5 meters, a sturdy trunk girth of 2.7 meters, and a gracefully spreading canopy, forming a unique scene where history dialogues with the present.

For this year's ginkgo viewing season, UniPark MAX has launched a creative public engagement initiative. From now on, visitors who take photos of the ancient tree, collect a few fallen leaves, and share their experience on Xiaohongshu can redeem a "DIY autumn leaf bookmark kit" at the customer service desk.

The healthy longevity of this tree, which has weathered five centuries, is attributed to years of scientific preservation and meticulous care. The district's ancient tree protection department maintains detailed records for this ginkgo and regularly monitors its growth indicators.

Specialized conservation measures, including cavity restoration, anti-corrosion reinforcement, structural support, and nutrient rejuvenation, have been systematically implemented. In recent years, electronic fencing and digital monitoring technologies have also been introduced to enhance its protection.
