Three Putuo roads to keep fallen leaves for scenic beauty

November 27, 2025 |

From December 1, three roads in Putuo District—Huaxi Road, Tongbai Road, and Tangpu Road—will join Shanghai's "No Leaf Sweeping" initiative, allowing fallen leaves to accumulate naturally to create picturesque autumn landscapes. They are part of a citywide program covering 44 roads this season.

The three selected roads are all lined with plane trees, renowned as the "king of street trees." During the leaf-fall season, golden leaves dance in the air and gently blanket the ground, transforming these streets into a fairy-tale-like setting.

Huaxi Road (Tongbai Road–Tangpu Road)
Stretching 1,022.5 meters, Huaxi Road plays an important role as one of the main roads around Caoyang No. 1 Village. It is home to a hospital, primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, public service facilities, and a nursing home. In 2021, city management authorities upgraded it into a comfortable, smooth, and aesthetically pleasing model street.

Tongbai Road (Zaoyang Road–Meiling Road S.)
Tongbai Road, a north-south route spanning about 423 meters, is a road rich in historical and scenic character. It is surrounded by numerous residential neighborhoods, creating a vibrant community atmosphere.

Tangpu Road (Huaxi Road–Meiling Road N.)
Though neither wide nor long, Tangpu Road has witnessed over 70 years of history alongside Caoyang New Village, China’s first large-scale residential community built after the liberation in 1949.
