China's first theme park centered around 10 classic IPs from Shanghai Animation Film Studio, the SAFS Popome Edutainment Park, officially opened at Global Harbor in Putuo District on June 1.
This 6,000-square-meter immersive space uses technology-enhanced games and original designs to recreate Chinese animation classics like "Havoc in Heaven," "Nezha Conquers the Dragon King," and "Black Cat Detective," creating a collision of childhood memories across two generations. From "Dragon Palace Exploration" to "Peach Orchard Picking," children can transform into Monkey King, Nezha, or the Seven Fairies while freely exploring over 40 themed scenes.
The park offers free Hanfu costumes of Nezha and Monkey King. Multiple career experience zones allow children to roleplay as car washers or grocery shoppers. In the "Avanti's Treasure" area, AI technology enhances sandpit games - kids must dig for "tech treasures" in the sand based on screen prompts to help Avanti fight villains.
How to make 50-year-old cartoon characters appeal to today's children? The design team transformed classic IPs into "chibi" versions with enlarged heads, simplified body lines, and "dopamine aesthetics" color schemes. Ninety percent of park props and decorations were redesigned with "Chinese-style ingenuity."
"We aim to help young families rediscover the charm of Chinese animation through immersive scenes and interactive experiences, while providing a replicable model for domestic IP industrialization that boosts both cultural confidence and commercial value," said Li Zao, deputy general manager of Shanghai Film Co Ltd and chairman of Shanghai Yingmi Culture.
Popome Edutainment Park plans rapid expansion through a "flagship + mini-store" model, with future 300-square-meter mini-stores in major shopping districts nationwide rotating IP themes quarterly.
