Industrial chic meets Shikumen heritage: Moxy Putuo hotel debuts on Suzhou Creek

May 08, 2025 |

On the banks of Suzhou Creek in Tailai Fang, a cluster of lane-house buildings carrying the memories of 1930s Shanghai has been transformed into the Moxy Shanghai Putuo hotel, perfectly blending the Shanghai-style charm of Shikumen architecture with the modern vitality of industrial design.

As Marriott's trendy hotel brand specifically designed for millennials, Moxy Putuo's location in Tailai Fang by Suzhou Creek is deeply meaningful. This area was the birthplace of China's modern national industry, surrounded by industrial heritage sites including the Shanghai Mint, brewery, textile mill and printing factory.

The hotel's renovation carefully preserved Shikumen elements like gray bricks, black tiles and dormer windows (locally called “tiger windows”), while incorporating exposed brick walls and metal components in industrial design, creating a perfect dialogue between history and contemporary trends.

The hotel features 92 uniquely styled guest rooms with space-maximizing designs like lift-up beds and vintage suitcase-shaped minibars. Exposed brick walls and polished concrete floors showcase traces of the industrial era.

Some rooms specially retain authentic Shikumen-style courtyards. Guests can step directly from floor-to-ceiling windows into private courtyards, experiencing the century-old Shanghai charm of gray bricks, dark tiles and carved lintels in the central courtyard.

The skylight king rooms are particularly ingenious, preserving the 4-meter-high ceilings and tiger windows. When sunlight filters through traditional roof tiles into the room, guests can appreciate the architectural aesthetics of old and new blending in the interplay of light and shadow.

The Moxy lobby centers around an open industrial-style space that cleverly combines reception, coffee corner and bar functions - serving specialty coffee by day and transforming into a vibrant social bar at night.

Centered around Moxy hotel, visitors can explore Putuo's trendiness and local flavor within walking distance: the Hongshou Fang food market offering diverse cuisines; Tongyi Lane around the corner with trendy flagship stores and independent cafes; and not far away, the unique architecture of Tian An 1000 Trees and the industrial art of M50 Creative Park complement each other beautifully.
