A new era of agriculture with data-driven vertical farming

March 06, 2025 |

In an office space within the "Innovation Lane" sci-tech industrial park in Putuo District, rows of lush green vegetables grow steadily under LED lights in the display hall's planting racks. There is no soil, no sunlight, only the faint hum of sensors—this is the "vertical farm" showroom created by Moquan Biological Co Ltd, founded by Qin Chuhan, a post-90s returnee from overseas.

"Traditional agriculture depends on the weather, but we rely on data," Qin said with a smile. This young entrepreneur combines AI technology with agriculture, enabling crops to grow "unaffected by weather" in a closed environment.

Moquan uses AI algorithms and self-developed hardware to regulate environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, and light, creating a fully controllable artificial climate. Whether it's vegetables or high-value cash crops, efficient and high-quality cultivation can be achieved.

"Traditional farming relies on the experience of 'masters,' but we turn that experience into code. In Shanghai, we can grow medicinal herbs that typically thrive at 2,000 meters above sea level in Yunnan, and with more consistent quality," Qin explained.

"If we build 'vertical farms' directly at the consumer end, we can achieve local production and local sales, reducing the supply chain distance by over 90 percent," Qin elaborated. "Chain restaurants use our containers to grow herbs, pharmaceutical factories cultivate rare medicinal plants, and even ranches customize high-protein forage grass... The application scenarios for this technology are far more diverse than imagined."

The inspiration for this technology stems from Qin's entrepreneurial experience during his studies in Canada. With a background in economics and computer science, he had little formal experience in agriculture but was driven by a passion for plant cultivation.

He explored the application of AI in agriculture and, after years of technical accumulation, successfully developed a vertical farming system integrating software and hardware.
