At the intersection of Changshou Road and Jiangning Road, the Tongyili block urban renewal project—"Xibu Space"—is set to open soon, adding a new Shanghai-style commercial district to Putuo.
The buildings in the Tongyili block were originally constructed in the 1920s and 30s, consisting of three old-style lane neighborhoods. Over time, they fell into disrepair and no longer matched the bustling atmosphere of Changshou Road.
To improve living conditions of the residents and revitalize the area, Putuo District officially launched a renovation project in 2019. The project involved demolition and reconstruction, structural preservation and the addition of underground spaces. The distinctive "fishbone" street layout connects the three neighborhoods into a cohesive pedestrian district, transforming it into a multifunctional commercial and office landmark.
The rich Shanghai cultural style leaves a lasting impression at the Xibu Space. Every detail—from the exterior walls to the windows and eaves—reflects the character and texture of the old architecture.
The buildings feature mainly gray bricks and stone for the exterior walls, with sections of red brick and glass curtain walls interspersed, creating a dynamic architectural form that breathes new life into the old structures.
Xibu Space is scheduled to open soon, aiming to create a trendy social landmark and a mixed-use creative office space. It will offer a Shanghai-style commercial district that integrates culture, art, dining, entertainment and specialty retail.
The project has a total building area of about 15,000 square meters, with about 6,500 square meters underground. It will also introduce nearly 1,000 square meters of urban public activity space and nearly 60 parking spaces for vehicles.
