This summer, a group of foreigners traveled from afar to Putuo District Central Hospital to study traditional Chinese medicine.

As the clinical medical college of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Putuo District Central Hospital annually hosts students from TCM training programs in countries like Belgium and France. The bustling scene of treating winter diseases in summer has also become a classroom for teaching foreign students. 

"I come from Belgium, where winters are very cold and many people suffer from joint pain. I am very interested in moxibustion," student Sophie said. Previously, they treated patients with joint pain throughout the year, but now she knows that treating during the hottest days of summer can be more effective.

"I've always liked TCM acupuncture; it's miraculous and very effective. I apply the acupuncture techniques I learned in my work," said Philippe, a Belgian student who is at the hospital for the second time. 

In 2019, he completed his acupuncture clinical internship at the hospital. With a passion for and dedication to acupuncture, he not only integrated his knowledge into practice but also bravely took the step to start his own acupuncture clinic.

"Now, many foreigners like and trust TCM, and I also need to continuously improve my skills," Philippe said. Today, his acupuncture clinic has gained some fame locally, not only providing TCM treatment services to patients but also helping more people understand traditional Chinese medicine and culture. 

This year, Philippe returned to Putuo hospital with enthusiasm, hoping to enhance his acupuncture skills through further study.

Since the 1980s, the Rehabilitation Department of Putuo District Central Hospital has been hosting international TCM study programs, teaching more than 200 students from various countries. By fostering cultural exchanges through heritage and innovation, the hospital contributes to the global health sector with the power of TCM.
