Putuo District is one of the central urban areas of Shanghai, with an area of 55 square kilometers and a resident population of 1.28 million (registered population of about 900,000). Located in the northwest of the downtown Shanghai, it is an important node for Shanghai to connect and serve the Yangtze River Delta.

There are 166 educational institutions of various types and 225 school sites throughout Putuo District, including 82 kindergartens, 76 primary and secondary schools (24 primary schools, 12 junior high schools, 24 nine-year-system schools, two twelve-year-system schools, four senior high schools, seven high schools, and three special education schools), one secondary vocational school, one spare-time university, and one college of education, and five educational centers of various types.
There are about 104,800 students at school in the whole district, consisting of 20,100 kindergarteners, 44,100 elementary school students, 28,900 junior high school students, 10,200 senior high school students, and 1,500 secondary vocational school students.
There are 10,198 teachers throughout the district (8,781 full-time teachers), including 975 senior high school teachers, 2,545 junior high school teachers, 3,247 primary school teachers, 1,668 preschool teachers, 121 secondary vocational school teachers, and 165 teachers in other educational institutions such as colleges of education.
