Work to add an elevator in the old residential complex of a building in Guixiang New Village of Putuo District kicked off on March 1.
Encouraged by a similar successful case in the district, residents of the 35-year-old building decided that they needed the same facility as well.
With a sixth-floor resident taking the lead, a consensus by all 24 households was achieved in just two days, after a survey and much discussion.
Staff in the neighborhood committee as well as the builder searched for relevant original building statistics and sought help from experts before finally nailing down the construction scheme.
The city’s policy to facilitate elevator construction also accelerated the process and which also meant that approval documents were issued in time.
