Putuo is carrying out small-scale renovation for riverside communities to beautify the environment.

The 4.1-hectare Yinghua Community was built in the 1980s and now has 986 households. It is named after cherry (pronounced yinghua in Chinese) trees planted by some Japanese residents.

But the community showed deteriorating environment as people erected illegal structures along the riverbank and dumped waste into the river. Recently, workers dredged the river and removed 1,830 square meters of illegal buildings from the riverbank.
