Items-for-share program is popular with residents

A community program to pool unused household items for sharing has won approval from residents in Lanling Garden community in Putuo District after one year of practice.

The community workers came up with the idea and asked local families to share their idle household items with people in need.

Volunteers were mobilized to draw a map of the community and mark locations of available items. When someone wants to borrow an item, a volunteer will note it down and bring the item to him or her. The map is updated from time to time.

The program has collected 143 items from bikes to wheelchairs, scooters and inflators. About 900 families have joined the program and over 1,000 people benefited from it.

The community volunteers now want to expand the scope of their items-for-share program.
