More than 200 pieces of ivory carving were shown at Shanghai Friendship Store in Putuo from June 22 to 25. They are the works of Zheng Suisheng, a Wenzhou artist skilled in ivory carving, now an intangible cultural heritage of the city.
Ivory carving has a history of several thousand years. Exquisite ivory works used to be selected as national gifts.
Zheng has been making ivory carvings for three decades and has won numerous national awards. With the Chinese government enforcing a total ban on ivory trade at the end of this year, this traditional craft will only be seen at museums.
