Shanghai Putuo Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, previously known as Labor Hospital, was first built in 1953. It was awarded the title of “National Model Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine” by State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1999 and became the training hospital of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the same year. In 2000, it joined the Shanghai Long Hua Hospital Group of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2001, it claimed its sixth consecutive title of “Shanghai Civilized Unit”.
The hospital's outpatient department offers clinic services of internal medicine, surgery, orthopedics and traumatology, massage, acupuncture, otolaryngology and ophthalmology, specializing in the treatment of encephalopathy, gastrointestinal disease, cardiovascular disorders, tumor, diabetes, kidney disease, asthma, dizziness, insomnia, anorectal disease, TCM rehabilitation, gout and gallstones. And the inpatient department sets up wards of internal medicine, encephalopathy，orthopaedics and traumatology，surgery and proctology, and also takes responsibilities of Chinese medicine treatment, teaching, scientific research and health care and other tasks for the whole district.
The hospital also has medical technology departments such as radiology department, laboratory department, and pharmacy department, and is equipped with spiral computed tomograph,Doppler ultrasound equipment, electronic gastrointestinal endoscopy, automatic TCM decocting machine and various TCM diagnosis and treatment equipment.

1."Twelfth Five Year Plan" Key Specialty Construction Project of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine - Anorectal Department
The anorectal department of Putuo Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the "Twelfth Five Year Plan" key specialty construction projects of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, also a unique department for treating anorectal disease in Putuo district. After a long term clinical practice, the department has formed its diagnosis and treatment characteristic of giving priority to TCM while combining Chinese and western medicine and apply comprehensive therapy to treat hemorrhoids, anal fistula, constipation, enteritis and other anorectal diseases.
2. Shanghai Key Clinical TCM Discipline – TCM Pyocutaneous Department
The TCM Surgery Department of Putuo Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a construction unit of Shanghai Key Clinical TCM Discipline- pyocutaneous discipline. It inherits GU’s TCM surgery theories and treatment features of Long Hua hospital, keeps innovating and has rich experiences in treating skin ulcer, acute gout arthritis and diabetic foot with integrated Chinese and Western therapies.
3. "Twelfth Five Year Plan" Key Specialty of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Encephalopathy Department)
Established in 1994, the Encephalopathy (stroke) Department of Putuo Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a characteristic department for treating stroke with traditional Chinese medicine in Shanghai and a construction unit of "Eleventh Five Year Plan" Key Specialty (Stroke) of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. After passing inspections in September,2011, it was included in the "Twelfth Five Year Plan" Key Specialty (Encephalopathy) of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Febrary,2012.
