Historical and Cultural Heritage
Putuo District has a profound historical and cultural heritage. There are more than 40 existing cultural relics, covering the industrial heritage, religion, architecture, culture and education construction, residential mansion, revolutionary historical sites and other type of relics. The hydraulic ruins of the Yuan Dynasty under archaeological excavations were named as one of the top ten archaeological discoveries in China in 2006. The section which Suzhou Creek runs through the district has become the birthplace of national industry of Shanghai as well as modern China, with nearly 20 industrial heritages, including the former site of the Central Mint, Fu’xin Flour Mill site, Jiangsu Liquid Medicine Factory site, Shanghai Brewery site and Tianli Nitrogen Plant site etc. Putuo District has relatively unique resources of religion and culture. Zhen Ru Temple is the only existing floor construction of the Yuan Dynasty in Shanghai. There are also many national key cultural relics protection units, such as , Jade Buddha Temple which is famous in Southeast Asia, Huxi mosques and other famous religious places. Putuo is also one of the birthplaces of the Chinese Communist Party-led labor movement. Red Huxi is the title won at that time for the district. Many revolutionary movement sites of workers had been retained in the district. In addition, Putuo District Museum has seen rapid development in recent years. Other than the newly completed Shanghai Textile Museum, Gu Zhenghong Memorial, Shanghai Mint Museum, Meng Qing Pavilion and a number of specialized museums, about 10 thematic museums including Cruiser and Vessel Exhibition Hall, Trademark and Match Stamp Museum, Jackie Chan Film Art Exhibition Center are also being built in Changfeng Ecological Business Center.
