Shanghai Ganquan Foreign Languages Middle School is a state run school which was established in 1954 with seven grades in total ( Grade 6-12). Ganquan was awarded several titles such as The Experimental Demonstration High School in Putuo District, Shanghai Role Model in Cultural and Ethical Progress, Shanghai Exemplary School on Foreign Exchange. The school has started offering Japanese language courses since 1972, with the largest scale and longest history among all the schools who take Japanese as a first foreign language in Shanghai. At the moment, there are about 1,500 students and 200 faculties ( 10 of which are foreign teachers) in the school.
In the light of specialization in Japanese teaching while developing the multi-language courses as our feature, Ganquan has offered English, Japanese, German and French courses as first foreign languages and offered Thai, Korean and Spanish courses as a second foreign language. We have established sister-school partnerships with around 40 schools in 10 countries, including Japan, Germany, Britain, Australia and so on. The school receives a lot of foreign visiting groups and sends many students and teachers abroad for exchange every year.
There is a foreign students department with about 60 students who study Chinese language and culture in the school. Some of them entered the famous Chinese universities after passing the relevant examinations.
To implement the education philosophy of acquiring a global perspective while retaining patriotism, the school is well-equipped with facilities such as a Chinese culture pavilion, Japanese tea house, rooftop garden, multi-language examination and assessment center, martial arts gymnasium, fencing room, staff reading room, Okayama library of Japanese books, Mitsui corner of Japanese books, a simultaneous interpretation training room and a Quebec French classroom. All of them embody our ethos of cross-cultural awareness.
